Cristiano Ronaldo offered improved Nike deal

February 26th, 2010

Nike will pay Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo six million euros per year until 2014 under a new sponsorship deal it has reached with the Portuguese winger, sports daily Marca reported Thursday.

The 25-year-old earned 4.5 million euros (6.0 million US dollars) under his previous contract with the world’s largest sporting goods maker, the newspaper said.

While the new deal makes Ronaldo the best paid footballer of those which Nike sponsors, the amount he makes is still lower than that dished out to other athletes, such as basketball stars Kobe Bryant and LeBron James of the NBA.

Nike says it will win FIFA World Cup vs Adidas

February 25th, 2010

Nike, the world’s largest sporting goods maker, will extend its lead in sales of soccer-related products over rival Adidas helped by new launches and a marketing blitz at this summer’s FIFA World Cup, its chief executive told Reuters on Wednesday.

Mark Parker also said that consumer confidence remained fragile and forecast a “long gradual” recovery.

However, he added that Nike was taking market share from competitors and seeing a “slight improvement” in orders, including a “significant” pick-up in demand for soccer-related footwear, clothing and equipment.

“We’re entering a period where we are going to extend our leadership further (in soccer). So the World Cup is a great opportunity to see that happen, certainly (with) the product we’re creating and the presence we will have,” he said in an interview.

HERZOGENAURACH, Germany, Feb 17 (Reuters) – German sporting goods maker Puma (PUMG.DE) gave a subdued outlook for the soccer World Cup year of 2010, saying it expected the overall environment to remain tough, after posting a weaker-than-expected finish to 2009.

“In light of the ongoing restrictive consumer environment and the overall global economic volatility, continued restrained consumer behaviour is to be expected, which can affect sales in 2010,” said Chief Executive Jochen Zeitz.
